Biography
Laurel Halo is an electronic musician and DJ based in Los Angeles, California. She is known for her genre-fluid catalog, drawing on jazz, dub, ambient, pop, and techno. Halo explores diverse soundscapes of “drifting art pop pieces”, “jazz-inspired experimental techno,” and “minimalist ambient compositions.”
Her debut album, Quarantine, was dubbed as Album of the Year 2012 by the music magazine The Wire. Her work has been released on labels like Hyperdub, Honest Jon’s, and Portraits GRM. In January 2021, she launched her own record label, Awe, alongside a monthly NTS Radio show under the same title. Since its launch, she released her fifth studio album, Atlas (2023), followed by MK Velsorf & Aase Nielsen’s Opening Night (2025).
In addition to her studio work and live performances, she is also a DJ, most notably releasing her DJ-Kicks mix in 2019. Halo has also composed original scores for films Possessed and Midnight Zone, along with a collaborative piece featuring the Japanese virtual pop star Hatsune Miku, commissioned by CTM and Transmediale. Throughout her career, she has collaborated with artists like Julia Holter, Oliver Coates, and Klein. In January 2023, Halo joined the faculty of Composition and Experimental Sound Practices at the California Institute of the Arts. .
