Biography
Mitsuki Laycock (born September 27, 1990), also known as Mitski Miyawaki, and professionally as Mitski, is an American singer-songwriter. She self-released her first two albums, "Lush" (2012) and "Retired from Sad, New Career in Business" (2013), while studying composition at Purchase College’s Conservatory of Music. Her third studio album, "Bury Me at Makeout Creek", was released in 2014 through Double Double Whammy. She signed with Dead Oceans in 2015 and released "Puberty 2" (2016), "Be the Cowboy" (2018), and "Laurel Hell" (2022), with the latter reaching the top ten in several countries. In 2023, she released her seventh studio album, "The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We", whose single "My Love Mine All Mine" became her first song to enter the Billboard Hot 100. Her eighth studio album, "Nothing's About to Happen to Me", was released on February 27, 2026.
Laycock was born in Mie Prefecture, Japan, to an American father and a Japanese mother, and grew up in multiple countries including Turkey, China, Malaysia, the Czech Republic, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo due to her father’s work with the United States Department of State before settling in the United States. She has a sister and grew up speaking Japanese as her first language. During her teenage years, she briefly worked with a talent manager in Japan and later wrote her first song at age 18 while living in Ankara, Turkey. She initially enrolled at Hunter College to study film before transferring to SUNY Purchase College to study studio composition, where she recorded and self-released her first two albums. She also met producer Patrick Hyland during this period, who became a long-term collaborator.
After graduating, she was briefly the vocalist for the band Voice Coils and continued developing her solo work. "Bury Me at Makeout Creek" marked a stylistic shift toward guitar-driven music and received critical acclaim, though it did not achieve major commercial success. In 2016, "Puberty 2" was released to critical praise, with its single "Your Best American Girl" later being highly ranked in retrospective lists. In 2018, "Be the Cowboy" was released and received widespread critical acclaim, being named album of the year by several publications. Its track "Nobody" later gained renewed popularity through social media, contributing to increased streaming of the album.
From 2018 onward, Mitski incorporated choreographed stage movement into live performances, influenced in part by Butoh. She announced in 2019 that she would end touring indefinitely and initially considered leaving the music industry, but later returned to recording. In 2021, she released "Working for the Knife" and later "The Only Heartbreaker", both leading into the album "Laurel Hell" in 2022. The song "The Only Heartbreaker" reached number one on the Billboard Adult Alternative Airplay chart. She also contributed to the song "This Is a Life" with David Byrne and Son Lux for the film "Everything Everywhere All at Once", earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song.
In 2023, she released "The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We" and promoted it with limited cinema events and select concerts in Europe and North America. She participated in projects including Spotify Singles in 2024 and contributed music to various film and media works. A concert film titled Mitski: "The Land" was released in 2025 alongside a live album titled "The Land: The Live Album". In early 2026, she released the album "Nothing's About to Happen to Me" preceded by the singles "Where’s My Phone?" and "I’ll Change for You".
