What is Guess the Year?

Guess the Year is a free online music release date game. Each round plays a brief audio preview and asks: when did this song come out? Slide a timeline from 1960 to 2026, tap Lock in, then see the real year and your points.

In multiplayer mode, everyone in your live room hears the same clip, guesses independently, and watches party guesses land on a shared timeline after every track — with standings that update in real time.

Unlike trivia that asks for artist names or lyrics, release-year guessing maps sound to era — production, drum textures, vocal processing, even master quality all become clues. That makes it one of the best free multiplayer music quiz formats for mixed groups at parties or on Discord.

How a round works

  1. 1

    Listen

A clip starts automatically. Normal mode shows title, artist, and art. Hard mode hides everything until you lock in — same in solo and multiplayer.

  2. 2

    Guess the release year

Drag the slider across six decades and press Lock in. You lose five points per year off — a rough guess often beats skipping.

  3. 3

    Reveal & react

See the correct year, your points, and where friends landed in multiplayer. React meh, like, or love before standings update and the next track plays.

Scoring

Exact match = 100 points. Each year off costs five. Guess 1999 for 2001 and earn 90. Solo mode tracks totals across a full deck; multiplayer accumulates across the whole match with live leaderboards.

Tips

  • Listen for production, not just melody — drums and tape hiss date tracks fast.
  • Use genre tags in Normal mode to narrow plausible decades.
  • Watch the party rail in multiplayer after reveals to calibrate future guesses.
  • Practice in Hard mode — audio-only is the fastest way to improve solo or with friends.

FAQ

Is Guess the Year free?
Yes. Solo play requires no account. Live multiplayer rooms only need a display name when friends join via your invite link.
Can I play Guess the Year multiplayer online?
Yes. Create a live party room, share the link, and everyone hears the same song clip, locks in a release year, and sees shared reveals and standings in real time. Works on phones and desktops — no app download.
How many players can join a live room?
Party rooms support small groups — ideal for game nights, Discord hangouts, or remote friends. Each player guesses independently; scores sync on a shared leaderboard after every track.
How does scoring work?
Exact release year = 100 points. Each year off costs 5 points, minimum zero. Being within two or three years often keeps you competitive in multiplayer rounds.
What is Hard mode?
Hard mode hides title, artist, and cover art while you guess the release year. Same scoring — significantly tougher in solo and multiplayer.
What songs are included?
Decks span genres and decades from the 1960s through today, mixing hits and deep cuts — built for music release date guessing, not generic trivia.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. The year slider, lock-in buttons, and live multiplayer room UI are built for touch.
