What Risocast is

A public record of what you listen to, and the things it builds out of that: a ranking, a map, a card.

WHAT IT IS

Risocast is a place to keep a record of what you listen to, in public. You log albums and songs, give them a score out of five, and write about the ones you have something to say about.

You do not have to log everything by hand. The Windows desktop app reads whatever your machine is playing, in any player, and records it, so the log fills itself in from what you actually listened to.

Everything else on the site is built out of those logs, and most of it is drawn rather than listed: a ranking of your records, a map of your whole taste, a river showing how it changed over the years, and a card you can share.

WHY IT LOOKS LIKE 2003

Risocast is the music player the early 2000s never got around to building.

Back then your player already knew you better than any profile did. It held everything you owned and everything you kept going back to, and it did nothing with it. Identity lived somewhere else, on a page where you typed your favourite bands into a box and hoped somebody believed you.

Risocast is what happens when those are the same thing. What you listen to is the profile. It builds into something you own and can hand to somebody: a ranking, a map, a card. And because it is made out of what you actually played rather than what you claimed, two of them laid side by side mean something. That is how you find people here.

So the costume is not nostalgia for its own sake. A title bar, menus, tabs and a status bar make small actions cheap: you can right-click anything, the menus hold real options, and a window can be moved out of the way. A page cannot do any of that.

HOW YOU USE IT

Log records as you listen to them. The app puts them in order, draws them on a map, and builds a card out of both. Your profile holds all of it, and that is the link you send to somebody.

What you have logged is your identity here. There is no bio to write and no follower count. Finding somebody whose taste lines up with yours only means anything if both logs are honest, so the log comes first.

WHAT IT DOES NOT DO

It does not stream music. You get thirty-second clips, enough to place a record you half remember. Everything else links out to Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, YouTube Music, Bandcamp and Discogs.

It does not recommend. Nothing here guesses what you might like next. The map and the ranking describe what you already listened to.
