Song, album and artist pages

Click any song, album or artist in Risocast and it opens in a Music window: who plays it, how often, how your own plays compare, its genres and sound, and where to go next. Windows keep their own history, like a browser, and you can open as many as you like.

A song

  • The cover, title, artist and album, on a panel coloured from the cover, with the cover's palette underneath.
  • Plays, listeners and likes on Risocast, and your own count.
  • Like, Set as anthem, and a play button named after your music app, such as ▶ Spotify (see Play in your app).
  • Plays: a chart of the last 8 weeks or 12 months, yours beside everyone's.
  • Listeners: who plays it, the biggest fan first, and who's listening right now.
  • Labels: the song's genres and tags with how many listeners voted for each, and your own votes (see genre labels).
  • Sound: tempo, key, energy, danceability and mood (see BPM, key and sound).

An album

The cover and year, total plays and listeners, and the tracklist, with a bar behind each song for how often you've played it. Songs you've played are in bold, so you can see what you haven't heard yet.

An artist

  • Their photo in a pixel-edged frame, their genres, and your year with them as a small chart.
  • Where they rank in your listening and when you first heard them.
  • Their top fan on Risocast.
  • Songs (yours or everyone's), Albums by year with your plays under each, and Similar artists, by shared listeners or by shared genres and tags.

Getting around

  • Links inside a Music window open in the same window; Back (the triangle in the title bar, or Alt+Left) goes back.
  • Right-click a song, album or artist for Open in New Window, or Shift-click it, to see two side by side.
  • Right-click a song for Play preview: 30 seconds, right there.
  • Find (Ctrl+F) searches songs, albums, artists and people.

On the web

Songs, albums and artists also have public pages anyone can read, with genre, release date, tempo and key. Start from the genre index.

Questions

Can I open more than one song or artist at a time?
Yes. Right-click one and choose Open in New Window, or Shift-click it.
Where do the genres come from?
From listeners' votes, counted on the Labels tab. Until you vote, Last.fm's tags are offered as suggestions; they're never counted as votes.

Risocast Help

A music log that fills itself in. It records the songs you play on your computer and your phone, turns them into your top songs, stats and a public profile, and finds people whose taste overlaps with yours.

Yes. The app and the website are free.

A song counts once half of it has played, or four minutes — whichever comes first. Songs of 30 seconds or less, and videos or podcasts over 20 minutes, never count.

On Windows, anything that shows up in Windows' media controls: Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music, Deezer, browsers, foobar2000, Windows Media Player and more (VLC, iTunes and MusicBee through their free media-controls plugin). On Android, any music app — it reads the same now-playing info your lock screen shows. You can also connect Spotify or import from Last.fm.

Yes. Plays are counted on your device and sent when you're back online, and the phone app opens without a connection.

It does the same core job — scrobbling, automatically — without plugins per player, and adds taste matching: see who listens like you and how much your taste overlaps.

Your profile and listening are public so people with similar taste can find you, unless you make your profile private (then only your buddies see it); your email never is. Nothing is sold and there are no ads; anonymous usage analytics (Microsoft Clarity, Google Analytics) show what to improve. See the privacy policy for the details.

How logging works

On Windows, Risocast reads the system media controls, so any player counts: Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music, Deezer, browsers, foobar2000. No plugins.

On Android the app reads what any music app is playing (it's coming to Google Play). Anywhere else, connect Spotify or a Last.fm username.

When a song countsAfter half its length, or four minutes, whichever comes first.Tracks under 30 seconds are ignored.Offline plays are counted on the device and sent later.

Taste twins

See how much your taste overlaps with anyone's, and find the people who listen most like you. The match comes from what you both actually play, not a list of favourites.
