One now-playing widget for every music app

A music app's widget shows that app and nothing else, so listening across Spotify, YouTube Music and SoundCloud means three widgets or none. Risocast's Now playing and Song strip widgets show whichever app is playing, with one set of buttons, and log each song as you go.

How it sees every app

Every Android music app reports its song to the system, which is how your lock screen and notification shade show it. With your permission (Notification access, asked once), Risocast reads that same information, so any app that shows up on your lock screen shows up in the widget.

The Now playing widget: a Windows 98 window with the song's cover and a pixel CD sliding out of it, the title, artist and app, a block progress bar, previous, pause, next and like buttons, and a status bar reading “Logging · counts in 0:48” and “53 today”
The app the song is playing in is named under the artist (here, Spotify).
The Song strip widget: the cover with its CD, the title and artist, a green logging light, and previous, pause, next and like buttons in one row

Set it up

  1. Install Risocast for Android (it's coming to Google Play) and sign in.
  2. Turn on phone listening: File › Connect media…, then Turn on… under Phone listening. Android asks you to allow Risocast under Notification access; that's how it sees what's playing.
  3. Touch and hold an empty spot on your home screen, choose Widgets, find Risocast and drag Now playing, Song strip or Today onto the screen.
  4. Play something in any music app. The widget picks it up within a second or two.

What you get beyond a widget

  • Every song logged, from every app, onto one profile with your stats, offline too.
  • When it counts: a green light and a countdown in the status bar.
  • A like button that works whichever app is playing.
  • Today: a third widget with your plays today and this week, across your phone and your PC.

Questions

Does it work with YouTube Music?
Yes. YouTube Music, Spotify, SoundCloud, Apple Music, Deezer, TIDAL, Amazon Music, Poweramp and any other app that shows its song on the lock screen.
Does it log videos and podcasts?
The widget shows them, but only songs are logged: anything over 20 minutes and clips of 30 seconds or less are left out, and the status bar says so.
Why does it need notification access?
That's the permission Android uses for reading what other apps are playing. Risocast reads the song, artist, album, cover and play state, and nothing else.

Risocast Help

A music log that fills itself in. It records the songs you play on your computer and your phone, turns them into your top songs, stats and a public profile, and finds people whose taste overlaps with yours.

Yes. The app and the website are free.

A song counts once half of it has played, or four minutes — whichever comes first. Songs of 30 seconds or less, and videos or podcasts over 20 minutes, never count.

On Windows, anything that shows up in Windows' media controls: Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music, Deezer, browsers, foobar2000, Windows Media Player and more (VLC, iTunes and MusicBee through their free media-controls plugin). On Android, any music app — it reads the same now-playing info your lock screen shows. You can also connect Spotify or import from Last.fm.

Yes. Plays are counted on your device and sent when you're back online, and the phone app opens without a connection.

It does the same core job — scrobbling, automatically — without plugins per player, and adds taste matching: see who listens like you and how much your taste overlaps.

Your profile and listening are public so people with similar taste can find you, unless you make your profile private (then only your buddies see it); your email never is. Nothing is sold and there are no ads; anonymous usage analytics (Microsoft Clarity, Google Analytics) show what to improve. See the privacy policy for the details.

How logging works

On Windows, Risocast reads the system media controls, so any player counts: Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music, Deezer, browsers, foobar2000. No plugins.

On Android the app reads what any music app is playing (it's coming to Google Play). Anywhere else, connect Spotify or a Last.fm username.

When a song countsAfter half its length, or four minutes, whichever comes first.Tracks under 30 seconds are ignored.Offline plays are counted on the device and sent later.
